Lynx Grafix

ORIGINAL SEMINAR ADVERTISEMENTS CREATED BY STUDENTS

The shirt making process of Lynx Grafix is straightforward. Students process a design sent in by a company, and create a silk screen for it. Next, Mr. Kornick orders the proper amount of t-shirts for the job, taking into account the money needed for shirts, ink, developer ink, and the screen itself. Next the screen is fitted onto the manual ink pulling machine. Then Mr. Kornick recruits volunteers for the ink pulling. The ink is laid in the desired pattern onto the shirts, which are then placed in a high-temp drier. Each shirt is checked for mistakes. Afterwards, the shirts are packaged, and shipped to the client.

Freedom of expression is a big deal at PGEC, and it is even more so in Lynx Grafix. Students are free to be whoever they want when working on a design, with the only limit being on vulgarity. “It’s a great opportunity to express yourself freely.” says a Lynx Grafix student. If a student wants to put a cat on a shirt, they put a cat on a shirt. If they want to make a banner for an election, nothing is stopping them. The students aren’t the only ones enjoying the creative process. “It’s a really fun and rewarding experience, for me and the students,” says Vince Kornick.

Working in Lynx Grafix is an enjoyable experience. The students learn in a hands on manner, rather than just listening to lectures. Learning is important, but how you learn is even more so. Vince Kornick, director of Lynx Grafix, and Jerry Sidor, co-director of the program, are all about having fun and learning on the job. “Fun, learning is fun” Sidor said. It doesn’t matter what you’re doing, Kornick and Sidor will find a way to make it fun or exciting.

The business aspect of Lynx Grafix is just as important as the creative side. The cost of shirts, ink colors, developer ink, silk screens, emulsion, vinyl, embroidery, etc., are all taken into account, and the students are informed of such costs. This discourages wasteful use of time and material, and teaches students that there is a financial consequence. Mr. Kornick and Mr. Sidor are developing a side program to teach students how to handle budgeting of finances and material. The students work with real clients, which put stress on working effectively and efficiently. If a mishap occurs, there is whiplash, and the students learn from their mistake more than they would if it was just a seminar.
